Episode 111: Uncle Howard

Uncle Howard

When Howard Brookner lost his life to AIDS in 1989, the 35-year-old director had completed two feature documentaries and was in post-production on his narrative debut, Bloodhounds of Broadway. Twenty-five years later, his nephew, Aaron, sets out on a quest to find the lost negative of Burroughs: The Movie, his uncle's critically-acclaimed portrait of legendary author William S. Burroughs.

IMDb

Reelgood has been on a roll delivering random movies that don't make us want to drop our television in the bathtub with us. Today's movie nearly had our tub filled. The premise for Uncle Howard is that Howard's nephew wanted to waste a year learning more about his deceased uncle and needed to make some income while doing so. He filmed the entire research project hoping Netflix would pay to stream the results to two podcasters. What can I say? We're in the business of making dreams come true. And also shattering them; This movie gets our first double-zero score for the season. We hand these out to the movies that shouldn't even qualify as movies. You can't just pick up a camera and film yourself Googling your uncle and then publish the results as a documentary when you find nothing interesting. I throw out hours of footage every day from the dashcam in my car. Could you imagine if I tried to get people to watch my boring commute? That's exactly what Uncle Howard is. It's an long, boring sit through rush hour traffic with absolutely no content. Publish your documentary if it actually panned out and you got some sweet footage of a Russian meteorite. Or those Russian Stop a Douchebag kids. Just be Russian. After the news, we're rambling about Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Annihilation, and Game Night. Next week, we're watching Pontypool, a Canadian movie that is also not Russian and will surely suck. Give it a go before we publish our review and let us know what you think. We'll include your comments in the episode!
