Episode 114: Nise: The Heart of Madness

Nise: The Heart of Madness

After being released from prison, Dr. Nise da Silveira is back at work in a psychiatric hospital on the outskirts of Rio de Janeirom where she refuses to employ the new and violent electroshock in the treatment of schizophrenics. Ridiculed by doctors, she is forced to take on the abandoned Sector for Occupational Therapy, where she would start a revolution through paintings, animals and love.

IMDb

Dr. Nise da Silveira performed revolutionary psychiatry work in Brazil during the 1900s. This is her biopic and, while informative, is the same story film always seems to tell about someone bringing new ideas to the table. As a movie-goer, we didn't like Nise: The Heart of Madness because we have already seen this plot numerous times but we did like learning about Dr. Nise. So, check it out for the documentation elements but be prepared to be annoyed by the entertainment value it tries to add. After the news, we're rambling about Masterminds, The Standups, Goodfellas, BTBAM's Automata I tour, and Ready Player One. Next week, we're watching Somm.
